When a mall, Sa Cavalcante’s Shopping Praia da Costa, wants to depart from their annual Christmas sculpture design, how do we render a palatable and yet radical variation of the traditional Christmas tree?

Changing yet preserving Christmas is a tall order. Our solution was to design, direct, and construct an interactive happening for shoppers that disrupted the traditional visuals of the season while also creating a new and memorable experience. We erected a giant 40-foot tall inverted sculpture of a Christmas tree hanging down from the ceiling. We placed the sculpture in the center of the mall's atriumand placed a 27-foot mirror on the floor directly below. Made of translucent and reflective material, the tree cast colorful shadows from the natural sunlight of the mall's skylit roof and begged shoppers to engage the traditional tree with a deeper engagement of the senses. Importantly, the tree immediately became a popular social media hit as guests found the reflected lights an patterns irresistible photo material.

Concepted, directed and produced the giant interactive sculpture for Sa Cavalcante’s Shopping Praia da Costa. It is an abstract “christmas tree” that lives in the shopping mall’s atrium. Standing 4 stories high (about 40 feet tall), the sculpture was made with translucent and reflective material to cast colorful shadows from the natural sunlight of the mall’s skyroof as well as transform itself through the lights installed around the sculpture. A 27 ft. diameter mirror on the floor directly below the sculpture completes the experience by allowing various vantage points for the audience.
